Pep Guardiola maintained that Manchester City had to be at their best to beat Liverpool the way they did.

City may have waived the Premier League title for Liverpool recently, but in their first game since that status changed, they retaliated against the new champions with a 4-0 victory.

It was an impressive performance by City, which remains in search of a cup win this season, even if they can no longer maintain the league title.

And while Liverpool may be in party mode in the days leading up to that game, Guardiola saw both teams in high quality, even before the game started.

“They were incredibly focused,” he told Sky Sports of his opponents. “I saw the honor guard and they didn’t even say thank you.

“That’s why they are champions of Europe and champions of the Premier League.

“I think they drank a lot of beer in the last week, but they came here without beer in their blood to play with us.

“We beat the champions, an extraordinary team. I think the game was good.

“They were brave to play, we were brave to play. After our first goal, we performed well and we could have scored more goals.

“We try to play football, taking risks, because they are the best team I have faced in my life with a lot of pressure, it is incredible how quickly they are, how quickly they play”.

Guardiola also praised player Kevin De Bruyne, who continued his remarkable season with a goal and an assist.

Asked how De Bruyne ranked among the greatest creators of all time in the Premier League, Guardiola said: “Players like him speak for themselves every day with the way they play.

“He is an important player for us, the Premier League and this club.”
