Coronavirus makes first death in Beijing

One person died in the city of Beijing due to the new coronavirus. It is the first fatal case in China's capital of the disease that is alarming the world.

The news was advanced this Monday by state television CCTV.

The victim was 50 years old and had been in the city of Wuhan, the epicenter of the new coronavirus epidemic.

The infection case was confirmed last week, on January 22, and the patient died, CCTV said.

The coronavirus, which has already killed 80 people in China, can be transmitted by patients who do not yet have symptoms of the disease.

The coronavirus epidemic has caused at least 81 deaths in China and more than 2,800 cases of infection.

Patients have been detected in more than a dozen countries. This Monday, Canada confirmed that the wife of a patient with coronavirus is also infected. Canadian authorities are investigating 19 suspected cases.

The Portuguese government wants to remove by air the Portuguese detained in Wuhan, the Chinese city where the coronavirus originates, which has killed more than 80 people in the country and has since been quarantined.

In a statement addressed this Monday to the 20 or so Portuguese residing in the city, the Portuguese embassy clarifies that it has started "immediately all steps" to proceed with the withdrawal by air, using a chartered civilian plane "that will pick you up Wuhan and from there take you directly to Portugal ".

"This is the plan that is being considered in Lisbon and on which we are already asking the appropriate authorities from the Chinese authorities in Beijing and Hubei [Chinese province of which Wuhan is the capital]", reads the same note.

Located in central China, the city of Wuhan was placed under de facto quarantine last week, with exits and entrances banned by authorities for an indefinite period, taking residents by surprise.
